Ebola Outbreak in Congo: What You Need to Know (2026)

A new Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in the remote Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking the 17th outbreak in the country since the disease first emerged in 1976. This latest outbreak has already claimed 65 lives and has 246 suspected cases, with the virus detected in 13 out of 20 samples tested. The affected areas are Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, located near the border with Uganda and South Sudan, raising concerns about the potential for cross-border spread.

The Ebola virus is highly contagious and can be contracted through bodily fluids such as vomit, blood, or semen. It is a rare but severe and often fatal disease. The outbreak comes just five months after Congo's last Ebola outbreak was declared over, and the country has a history of facing logistical challenges in responding to disease outbreaks. During the last outbreak, the World Health Organization faced significant challenges in delivering vaccines due to limited access and scarce funds.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is concerned about the risk of further spread due to intense population movement, mining-related mobility in Mongwalu, insecurity in affected areas, gaps in contact listing, and control challenges. The proximity of affected areas to Uganda and South Sudan also raises concerns. Africa CDC is convening an urgent high-level coordination meeting with health authorities from Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, along with key partners, to discuss immediate response priorities, cross-border coordination, surveillance, laboratory support, infection prevention and control, risk communication, safe and dignified burials, and resource mobilization.

The outbreak is particularly concerning given the ongoing violence in Ituri, where the Allied Democratic Force, an Islamic State-linked militant group, has killed dozens of people. The region is also battling armed groups such as the M23 rebel group, which launched a rapid assault in January and has since occupied key cities. Congo, Africa's second-largest country by land area, often faces logistical challenges in responding to disease outbreaks, and the current situation is likely to exacerbate the existing challenges.

This outbreak highlights the ongoing vulnerability of the region to infectious diseases and the need for robust public health infrastructure and coordinated international response efforts. The World Health Organization and other health organizations will need to work closely with local authorities and communities to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread. The potential for cross-border transmission also underscores the importance of regional collaboration and information sharing to effectively manage this public health crisis.
